WaterAid believes that water, sanitation and hygiene education are vital for the health, well being and dignity of poor people and provide the foundation for development and poverty reduction.

WaterAid began working in India in 1986 and now provides water, sanitation and hygiene education to people in 11 states. It is headquartered in Delhi and has four regional offices. WaterAid India works on improving water-sanitation and hygiene in rural and urban areas and schools, especially among the poor and marginalised. It provides critical support to the government to “Make WASH poverty a History”. Its programmes are aligned to a rights-based framework, enabling communities to demand services and take active part in the local governance processes. The service delivery work on the ground and the lessons are used as evidence for engaging at local and state governments and in national level advocacy for reforms in policy and practice.

Very heartening to know the endeavour of ndtv in promoting the Swachh Bharat campaign. But, I think we are all missing a very important point in country’s cleanliness drive.i believe Vikram Chandra will explain the importance of GARBAGE SEGREGATION to our celebrities and sponsors. Please read the news item in 19th november 2014 HINDUSTAN TIMES Delhi edition where it is reported that NGT has pulled up the Delhi government and Central Pollution Control Board for ignoring the rules on this important aspect of saving our environment and the health of the villagers. Their land is being used for landfill in all the big cities of our country. We need to educate the masses, especially in metros,to start segregating the waste from their homes before disposal. Similarly, the city bodies need to train and instruct their staff to make arrangements for segregated collection and proper treatment of waste before dumping it in landfill. If not done properly, we not only allow the environment get polluted but we endanger the health of our village people. ON TOP OF IT WE ARE REDUCING LAND WHICH WE NEED FOR DEVELOPING HOUSING FOR CITIES.

I am watching your program on TV. Please stop these symbolic video shoots of kids and grown ups sweeping small spots in public. It is more important to teach people to keep their own spaces clean and genuinely and have the paid municipal people clean what they are supposed to! We also need to stop grumbling about the lack of facilities and ensure that people do not destroy, steal and misuse what is available to begin with. It is not just the poor, middle class and such who dirty public places but the rich who do the same at airports, hotels, malls and on roads where they throw out dirt from their fancy cars. So everyone needs to be “taught” how to use toilets, public spaces etc.

If women can restrain themselves from peeing and defacating in public, why shouldn’t men do the same. We go to the loo before leaving home and look for clean loos where available in public places.

Who was the man who said women self help groups should be appointed to keep public toilets free? Why not men’s self help groups? Go to Sulabh toilets which are paid toilets, you have the men who maintain them, pocketing the money and not bothering to keep the place clean. Such organisations should ensure to at least keep paid loos clean. There should be free facilities in public places and tourist places for people who can’t afford to pay Rs. 5 or Rs. 10 for a pee for a whole family!!

It should be made mandatory for Market Associations, Shops, Roadside Vendors and such to keep waste bins for people to throw their garbage and make it their responsibility too to have these bins cleared at the end of the day and have the surrounding areas clean. You will see maximum garbage thrown in market areas which are clearly lacking facilities. When they have to pay for it, they will also ensure they provide facilities.

RWAs of all residential areas should likewise ensure that there is a toilet available in each and every block for casual domestic servants, guards, drivers etc. who do not have such facilities and honestly cannot be expected to hold up all day because no facilities are available.
