Actor Dia Mirza Gets Appointed As An Official Sustainable Development Goals Advocate By UN Environment

New Delhi: Actor-activist Dia Mirza who was before known as UN Environment’s Goodwill Ambassador for India has now been appointed as an official Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocate. She along with 17 other influential public figures across the globe has been appointed as one of the new SDG advocates by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Sharing the news with the netizens on social media, 38-year-old actor tweeted, “It is an honour and privilege to be appointed the UN Secretary General’s Advocate of Sustainable Development Goals. I will strive to convey the importance of achieving sustainable development for Peace, Planet, Prosperity.”

As an SDGs Advocate, the actor will be committed to raising awareness, inspiring greater ambition and pushing for faster action on the SDGs 2030, strengthening the message on the environment front including clean air, clean seas, wildlife protection, and climate change.

In an official statement, the UN Environment said that peace, prosperity, people, planet, and partnerships are the principles at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals, which the Member States agreed must be achieved by 2030, and they are also what drive the new class of SDG Advocates.
To build the momentum for transformative, inclusive development by 2030, the Secretary-General’s SDG Advocates will use their unique platforms and leadership to inspire cross-cutting mobilisation of the global community, reads the official statement.
The Advocates represent the universal character of the SDGs, hailing from governments, entertainment, academia, sports, business and activist organisations around the world. Some members of the previous class of SDG Advocates has been appointed as SDG Advocate Alumni. These include Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Nobel Laureate and Founder of Grameen Bank Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh.

Actor Dia Mirza has been known for raising her voice for a better environment from many years, she has replaced a large amount of plastic from her life – from ditching plastic toothbrush, bottles and sanitary pads – Dia Mirza has switched to a lot of eco-friendly alternatives.
The actor has also roped in her friends and relatives and has already convinced them to give up their toxic relationship with plastics. Her plea got support from actors Alia Bhatt, Diana Penty, Kalki Koechlin, Jackky Bhagnani, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ali Fazal M, Karan Johar, Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, and Kartik Aaryan.
Moreover, she has also made her residential apartment block zero waste by installing four composting bins within the society wherein members are expected to segregate their waste themselves.
NDTV – Dettol Banega Swachh India campaign lends support to the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Helmed by Campaign Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, the campaign aims to spread awareness about hygiene and sanitation, the importance of building toilets and making India open defecation free (ODF) by October 2019, a target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014. Over the years, the campaign has widened its scope to cover issues like air pollution, waste management, plastic ban, manual scavenging and menstrual hygiene. The campaign has also focused extensively on marine pollution, clean Ganga Project and rejuvenation of Yamuna, two of India’s major river bodies.
