New Delhi: Any gift, whether given or received, automatically turns attractive depending upon how glittery or colourful the gift wrapper is, isn’t it? But what one doesn’t realise is that millions of gift wrappers eventually end up in oceans or landfills and take thousands of years to decompose. Alarmed by the environment strains that this inevitable waste is likely to cause, actors Juhi Chawla and Alia Bhatt have appealed people to opt for an eco-friendly alternative ahead of Christmas Day.

The two actors, who have always been in forefront in spreading awareness about environmental issues, took to social media to send out their messages.

“The greatest gifts are not wrapped in Plastic but in Love. This Christmas let’s do something different, let’s ditch the plastic wrapping papers & use eco- friendly products. Be our environment’s Secret Santa. Let us know how you are wrapping your gifts this year! @CFTPlasticBan,” Juhi Chawla tweeted.

She also posted a video on hard-hitting facts about the wastes generated post festivals along with some disturbing images of animals getting choked on plastic waste. The video also offers eco-friendly alternatives like cloth, jute, cardboard that one can use to plastic wrapping.

Alia Bhatt took to her Instagram handle and requested her fans to end the year on a green note, “Now wrap your gifts with something that loves the environment too Lets end this year on green note! Let’s #CoExist #DIYDecember.”

The video also stars her closest friend and actor Akansha Ranjan Kapoor. The duo is seen wrapping their Christmas gifts in old newspapers. They appeal everyone to follow the 3-R policy of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ and convert their household trash into gift wrapping materials. The best Do-It-Yourself ideas will be shared on their Facebook page.

With just a few days left before the year ends, stay away from all the ways in which you are contributing to waste generation and make this your New Year resolution as well. Reuse your old trash and make your gift wrapping fancy this festive season. On receiving a gift, open the pretty wrapper carefully and reuse it in future. With most of gift wrappers made with shiny foil or coated in plastic film, they take several years to decompose, thus making it nearly impossible to recycle.

No need for candles as they warm the planet and cause heat pollution, just like how crackers “pollute” the air with noise. No need for church bells as they create noise pollution, just like loudspeakers
