Mumbai: Keeping surroundings clean and litter-free is the most basic social duty, a person can perform to keep diseases at bay and prevent environmental degradation. If the cleanup drives by beach warriors like Afroz Shah and Chinu Kwatra and sanitation awareness programmes by the government authorities are not enough to motivate you to execute your responsibility towards the environment then here’s an interesting incentive by none other than singer and rapper Guru Randhawa, whose music collection is graced by hits like ‘Lahore Di’, Ban Ja Tu Meri Rani’, ‘Patola’ and so on.

Joining the bandwagon of celebrities like Dia Mirza and Randeep Hooda who promote basic cleanliness and sanitation, music sensation Guru Randhawa recently hinted towards an upcoming music concert for music enthusiasts who are helping Mumbai keep clean. The musician participated in one of the beach cleanup drives in Mumbai at Bandra organised by the ‘I Love Mumbai Foundation’, where he appealed everyone to do their bit towards Mother Earth.

Taking about the same on a social media networking site, Guru Randhawa said,

Great to be part of the Chimbai Clean Up with I love Mumbai Foundation. Great feeling to do our bit for Mother Earth…planning a concert soon for volunteers who help to keep the city clean.

Confirming the idea of motivating people to keep their beaches waste-free to NDTV, beach warrior Chinu Kwatra, the man behind Dadar beach cleanup, says,

Guru Randhawa suggested of having a live concert on the beach immediately after a cleanup drive sometime early next year. We are hoping to execute the idea where we will give free tickets to the volunteers who participate in a 2-hour cleanliness drive. It is great way to attract the young crowd in keeping the environment clean.

Noted Hindi cinema screenwriter and father of actor Salman Khan, Salim Khan was also present at the Chimbai beach. He thanked the volunteers for cleaning the 400-year-old beach which has unfortunately turned into a dumping yard.

Yuva Sena President Aaditya Thackeray and President of ‘I Love Mumbai Foundation’ Rahul Kanal joined the drives.

“Kick started the cleanup drive at Chimbai Beach. It’s amazing to see volunteers at the clean ups doing great work. But let’s go beyond it. Stop littering, stop others from littering. Reduce waste generation,” Mr Thackeray said in a tweet.

Besides celebrities who extended their support to the Chimbai cleanup by marking their presence at the beach, actor Sohail Khan and cricketer Harbhajan Singh had shared the message last week on their respective social media handles and requested their fans to participate in the drive. “Request all to post this and aware everyone to help clean our beaches,” Harbhajan Singh wrote on Instagram.

The cleanup drive at the Chimbai beach in Bandra is Chinu’s fifth drive in the city after Dadar, Worli, Juhu-Kohliwada, Eangal. The drive has been undertaken in association with Aaditya Thackeray and ‘I Love Mumbai Foundation’.

Until recently, I wasn’t aware that a beach in Bandra existed. Last year, during one of our cleanup drives, Mr Thackeray raised the issue of the beach and so here we are attacking wastes on yet another beach of island city, says Chinu.

More than 1000 volunteers participated in the drive and collected around one tonne of plastic waste, “Since the beach is so old, 2-3 layers of plastic waste has been accumulated. Unlike the other beaches where the plastic waste was rather new, Chimbai beach has plastic wastes as old as 400 years. Hence Chimbai is another challenge but now that we have embarked on the journey, we will reach the finish line,” says Chinu.
