Best Out Of Waste: These Young Lads Of Chandigarh Set A Record By Turning Their School Trash Into A Striking Garden
These school children from Chandigarh have set a record by planting 600 saplings and upcycling waste products in a creative way – From reusing trash like PET bottles, toilet seats, jeans, old socks, the students used anything to everything in order to make their school garden
The school students from Government Middle School, Burail, Chandigarh, have created a park within the school premise using school’s trash like PET bottles, toilet seats, jeans, old socks. They have set an example for finding a creative and responsible way to deal with waste that can be replicated anywhere by anyone. Moreover, these children also landed themselves in the India Book of Records for planting 650 saplings and developing a green innovation out of waste materials.
This green endeavour in Chandigarh was recently inaugurated by Member of Parliament Kirron Kher. Applauding the efforts of the students and teachers, MP Kirron Kher said that she feels motivated to be part of this initiative. The young lads have set a unique model for rest of the world.
Explaining the process of the initiative, one of the volunteers from the activity added, the green garden is the outcome of our hardwork. We started this initiative a month ago, worked 13 hours a day but never felt tired. The feeling that we are working on something which is good for our school made us work harder and harder.
The team of 30 members worked continuously for 3 months and created a Green Park, simply by reusing the trash items in that space.
First we took permissions from our school and teachers and then started working on the trash project. We knew there is a lot of waste which is being pumped out of our school. It struck us, what’s better than utilising all this waste for something good and that’s how we created a green space in our school, said another volunteer from the school.
This project was part of the Chandigarh school’s Best out of the Waste event, which aimed to involve students to find sustainable solutions for the current waste disposal problems. This is not the first time that schools have been involved in the Swachh Bharat mission, previously many such endeavours have taken place, but, in the history, it will be the first time when students have done something as unique as this – a green garden has been created using all the trash from the school.
Upcycling is not a new process but in India, it is a relatively nascent. These Chandigarh school students show perfectly how one can get familiarised with this process.
Why Upcycling Is The Need Of The Hour
India generates 1,00,000 metric tonnes of Solid Waste every single day which is actually higher than many countries’ total daily waste generation taken together. Over 75% of the waste generated can easily be recycled, but, India is only treating 30% of the waste and rest is going to the landfills directly, untreated. The need of the hour is to treat waste and reduce the waste load from landfills.
