Fight Coronavirus: Union Minister Smriti Irani’s DIY Guide On How To Make A Homemade Mask
Ghar Baithe Mask Banao, Union Minister Smriti Irani urges people to make a mask at home and demonstrates how to make one fight coronavirus at home
New Delhi: Amid escalating worries of COVID-19 in India every passing day, the Union Health Ministry recently has put out a detailed advisory on the use of homemade protective cover for face and mouth. Inspired by the health advisory, Union Minister Smriti Irani took to her social media on Thursday to show how each one of us can make use of the time during this lockdown period and make a ‘DIY’ mask to fight coronavirus. Ms Irani shared a series of ‘DIY’ steps on her Instagram and urged people to wear a mask to slow the spread of the infection.
In her guide, 44-year-old, Smriti Irani shared a series of photos of herself making a mask. The first step in her tutorial was where she is seen cutting a piece of white cloth.
Followed by the second step, in which she has said,
Machine nahi hai toh sui dhaage se kaam chalao (If you don’t have a sewing machine, use a needle and thread).
She further adds,
Ghar Baithe Mask Banao’ (Sit at home and make homemade masks)..
The Union Minister concluded her posts by sharing a picture of the final product – a reusable cloth mask made at home.
On April 4, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had put up a detailed advisory on the use of homemade protective cover for face and mouth and said,
…it is suggested that people who are not suffering from medical conditions or having breathing difficulties may use the handmade reusable face cover, particularly when they step out of their house. This will help in protecting the community at large.

On April 7, the ministry also listed out the guidelines on how to use homemade masks. In a detailed video, union health ministry, recommended the following steps:
1. Remember to thoroughly clean and wash the cloth before stitching/making the mask at home
2. Always wash your hands before wearing a face mask
3. Do not throw your face cover, instead, wash it properly using hot water and soap. The ministry also recommends drying the homemade mask properly before reusing
4. The guidelines also suggested that the face masks should not be shared with anyone, it says, “One face cover is to be used by only one individual’
5. Lastly, the guidelines mention that homemade masks are not to be used by COVID-19 infected persons, health workers and those working or in contact with the coronavirus infected persons
