New Delhi: To celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday today (September 17), India crossed two crore COVID vaccinations mark in a day for the first time. The government set out with a target of 2.5 crore vaccinations. The cumulative doses administered in the country reached 2,18,87,384 at 6:30 pm, according to data on the Co-WIN portal. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya took to Twitter to announce the vaccine milestone,

The total number of doses administered in the country has crossed 78.68 crore. The daily vaccinations crossed the one-crore mark for the fourth time in less than a month.

Mr Mandaviya on Thursday, September 16, had called for a major push to the COVID-19 vaccination drive during Prime Minister Modi’s birthday today, saying it would be the perfect gift for him.

The government’s tracker showed around 42,000 vaccinations in a minute today, said a senior health officer.

The BJP has asked its units across the country to help get a large number of people vaccinated on the occasion. India managed to cross the one crore-mark by 1:30 pm, after which ministers and BJP leaders used social media to urge everyone to go and take their vaccine shots today.

The daily COVID-19 vaccination in the country was over 1 crore on September 6, August 31 and August 27.

Karnataka (23,01,639), Bihar (22,89,178), Uttar Pradesh (20,53,467), Madhya Pradesh (19,99,173) and Gujarat (16,91,346 ) are the top 5 states with most number of vaccination today, respectively.
