New Delhi: What initially began as an awareness rally on cleanliness in a small city of India, went on to set a Guinness World Record as the sun set. 2014 residents of Surat gathered and broke the record for most people sweeping the floor in a single venue for one minute. The rally at Udhana area of Surat was conducted by the Surat Municipal Corporation on March 15.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was kick started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to redefine the condition of Swachhta in India.

Since the launch, people from all over India, irrespective of caste, class, gender or region have enthusiastically participated in changing the face of cleanliness in India.

Civic bodies across the country have been leading cleanliness drives by organizing workshops, conducting rallies and implementing waste segregation systems in their cities.

The previous record was created in 2015, with a thousand people sweeping the floor in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
