International Nurses Day 2021: PM Modi And Other Ministers Express Gratitude To Nursing Staff At The Forefront Of COVID-19

New Delhi: International Nurses Day is observed on May 12 every year to honour the contributions made by nurses in society. The theme this year is, ‘Nurses: A voice to lead – A vision for future healthcare’. This year the day aims to look back and reflect on the impact of COVID-19 on the health system and the nursing profession and how this will affect the future of healthcare. Acknowledging the role of the nursing staff especially in the fight against COVID-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media and thanked the frontline warriors for working towards ‘healthy India’.

“International Nurses Day is a day to express gratitude to the hardworking nursing staff, who is at the forefront of fighting COVID-19. Their sense of duty, compassion and commitment towards a healthy India is exemplary”, wrote PM Modi.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu too urged people to express their gratitude to nurses for their invaluable contribution in advancing health and well-being of the people. He wrote, “On International Nurses Day, I compliment our nurses for rendering untiring, selfless service to the people. They have been at the forefront during this pandemic, being a critical link in our health infrastructure.”

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan thanked the nurses for going an extra mile to nurse the world to health during COVID-19. He said, “Your commitment to provide efficient & effective care founded on professionalism, skills & deep compassion is awe inspiring.”

The International Nurses Day also marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale – one of history’s most famous nurses, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. She took care of wounded British and allied soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War. Dr Vardhan called to take inspiration from Ms Nightingale and said, “She told the world the meaning of service by serving the injured in the battlefield even under adverse circumstances.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called) healthcare staff as ‘real heroes’ and thanked them for their service on the occasion of International Nurses Day. He wrote, “On this #InternationalNursesDay, my salute to thousands of nurses and frontline workers who are working day and night to save lives of the people during this pandemic.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot lauded the nurses for their sacrifices and selfless service to the nation. “Greetings on #InternationalNursesDay to all the nurses, who are the frontline warriors during present corona pandemic. They have been serving humanity & saving lives with utmost dedication & commitment”, he wrote.

“Kerala’s greatest exports are our nurses”, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and added, “They’re making their mark felt not just across our country, but around the globe as well. During this pandemic they’ve been toiling to save our lives. On this #InternationalNursesDay we salute each and every one of you!”

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi saluted the contribution of nurses and said, “My wishes to those who are nursing away pain and suffering from this world. We salute your contribution and admire your altruistic spirit. Thank you, Nurses.”

Sharing a picture with nursing staff, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor called for support, understanding, recognition, resources, insurance and time off to rest for nurses. “Saluting the heroic nurses who are the frontline warriors in the fight against #Covid, on their special day”, he wrote.

It aims to spread awareness about critical health issues facing the country. In wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the need for WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) is reaffirmed as handwashing is one of the ways to prevent Coronavirus infection and other diseases. The campaign highlights the importance of nutrition and healthcare for women and children to prevent maternal and child mortality, fight malnutrition, stunting, wasting, anaemia and disease prevention through vaccines.
