International Plastic Bag Free Day
On International Plastic Bag Free Day, Netizens Appeal ‘Say No To Plastic’
On International Plastic Bag Free Day, people appeal for a plastic-free India on social media, urge everyone to stop the use of plastic bags and opt for green alternatives
New Delhi: According to the World Count Facts, an online portal for facts, 5 trillion plastic bags are consumed every year – that’s 160,000 a second! To put this fact in perspective, if all the plastic bags consumed are stacked up it would cover an area twice the size of France. Why is this a problem? Well, a single bag of plastic takes around 1000 years to decompose completely, that means whatever plastic bags have been produced so far can still be found on the planet in some form. The result is that this huge accumulation of plastic bags harms the environment, end up choking our rivers, oceans, soil, water, and air. Not just that, use of plastic bags is one of the major reasons for marine life deaths. Around 100,000 marine creatures die every year from plastic entanglement and approximately 1 million seabirds die from eating plastic because plastic cannot be broken down by the digestive system in living beings.
On International Plastic Bag Free Day today, people on social media come out to urge people to give up on the use of this life-threatening object – Plastic Bags.
