National Green Tribunal Asks UP Government To Submit Report On Hazardous Waste Generated By Industrial Units
On August last year, NGT asked all states to file a detailed report on hazardous waste generated by industries
New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has granted two weeks’ time to the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a detailed report on the total amount of hazardous waste generated by the state’s industrial units and the agencies authorised for its collection, transportation and disposal. A bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim also asked the Uttar Pradesh government and the state pollution control board to furnish information about the capacity of the waste treatment plants. On August 29, 2017, the green court had directed all the states to file a detailed response about the agencies authorised to collect, transport, dispose of the hazardous waste as per the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules. Uttar Pradesh is yet to file a report.
“The counsel on behalf of State of Uttar Pradesh submits that as far as the State of Uttar Pradesh is concerned they have received the data and compiling it so as to file the detailed report as directed by this tribunal and he seeks two weeks’ time…,” the bench said on July 5. “Hence we grant two weeks’ time to the State of Uttar Pradesh and state pollution control board to file the report and such of the states who have not filed so far may do so in compliance to the order dated August 29, 2017,” it added.
The bench posted the matter for further hearing on July 30. The tribunal had issued the order earlier expanding the scope of the petition filed by Ghaziabad resident Rajiv Narayan and others. It also included the issue of hazardous waste in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand and the NCT of Delhi. Narayan had alleged that rapid development of industries had resulted in acute air and water pollution which was causing severe health problems for the city’s residents.
