About The Circular Design Challenge
This is the first award for sustainability that aims to offer solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industry in the country. Applicants are required to send in their entries using the official site of Circular Design Challenge. The criteria for the designers is that they will need to submit a proof concept of their sustainable collection and ensure that the material used for their collection, is up-cycled from diverse waste sources, including plastic.
The entries will be shortlisted and a final winner will be announced by the jury on January 31, 2019. The winning collection will then be showcased on Sustainable Fashion Day at Lakme Fashion Week in August 2019.
Why India Needs To Focus On Sustainable Fashion
India is drowning in its own waste, currently, the country is battling a crisis of growing landfills that have been exhausted beyond the permissible limits. The country generates over 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day and according to the World Bank, India’s daily waste generation will more than double to reach 377,000 tonnes a day by 2025. To tackle the garbage menace the need of the hour is to get all channels together and come up with sustainable solutions that will help tackle this waste mess.
