New Delhi: “There’s a lot that can happen if all political parties prioritise menstrual hygiene in their manifestos, but the onus doesn’t lie on the politicians alone to drive change. Every individual has a social responsibility. That can push for change in the society,” says Miss World Manushi Chillar, who is taking her menstrual hygiene campaign – Project Shakti global. It is a campaign she started before she became a beauty queen. The 20-year-old had kick-started the ‘Feminine Hygiene Awareness’ global tour on February 1. As of date, she has visited Hyderabad, Kolkata and is currently in New Delhi. In the coming days she will be covering four more cities in India and other countries of the world. Her aim is to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene and provide a sustainable model for good menstrual management.

After my victory at the beauty pageant, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had announced that he will arrange for free supply of sanitary napkins to girls in state schools. That’s a good move. However, I feel these are short-term arrangements. My ultimate vision is to be able to develop a “sustainable system” of manufacturing, selling and buying. So that, everyone has access to sanitary napkins, added Manushi Chillar while speaking to media in New Delhi.

Later in the day, Manushi also posted a picture on her social media platform and captioned it as,

“Today we met around 500 students from schools run by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation to talk about menstrual hygiene. What an enthusiastic response. It reminded me of the sessions I used to hold in various schools when I had started my campaign. Big thanks to my parents @neelam_chhillar4153 and @dr_mitra_basu_chhillar for helping me through those sessions where we three alone managed to initiate this project.”

For her efforts to spread awareness about menstrual hygiene, Manushi Chillar has even got thumbs up from Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. Praising her, he said,

“There are many beautiful individuals and dutiful persons but a blend of “beauty and duty makes one mighty. This is what Manushi Chillar exemplifies in lending her support to the cause of women.”

Mr. Naidu further added,

This initiative and the campaign is a combination of strengths of Beauty with Purpose and Freedom from Shame.
