This is not the first time Dia Mirza has made such an appeal. Last year on valentine’s day, the actor has started a ‘break-up’ campaign wherein she urged everyone to end their toxic relationship with single-use plastic items. Sharing facts about how plastic is polluting the environment, Dia Mirza had said,

This #ValentinesDay let’s BREAKUP with #SingleUsePlastics. #DYK a straw we use for minutes lasts over 500 years!? Join me to help #CleanSeas and #BeatPollution.

Dia’s appeal had also got support from many fellow actors like Alia Bhatt, Diana Penty, Kalki Koechlin and Jackky Bhagnani, who joined the actor in her ‘Break-Up’ campaign.

Apart from Voicing her concern about the plastic waste crisis, Dia Mirza is also known for giving up plastic from her own life. From using a toothbrush made from bamboo and getting rid of plastic water bottles, the actor is a long-standing supporter of environmental causes.

Plastic Crisis: How It Is Affecting The World

United Nations Environment Programme says that around the world there are about one million plastic drinking water bottles that are purchased every minute, while upto 5 trillion pieces of plastic are floating in the world’s oceans, which is equivalent to the size of Argentina, according to the study published in a Public Library of Science journal.

Plastic doesn’t get decomposed, so even a single-use plastic item like a straw or plastic glass, which is used once but continues to stay on the planet for more than 500 years. Most of the plastic finds its way into water bodies and ends up killing nearly one million birds, and 100,000 whales, sharks, seals, dolphins and turtles every year. Moreover, experts predict that if we continue to use plastic at this rate then by 2050 there will be more plastic than fishes in our water bodies.

The need of the hour for everyone – be it individuals or corporates is to take action to beat plastic pollution. Tell us in the comments box below your ‘break-up’ story with single-use plastic items.
