Valentine’s Day Special: Dia Mirza’s Appeal To Break Up With Plastics Find Favour With Celebrities

This Valentine’s Day, here’s how celebrities are ending their toxic relationship with plastics

New Delhi: From Alia Bhatt to Kalki Koechlin many celebrities joined, the ‘Break-Up’ campaign started by actor Dia Mirza and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to ask netizens to give up their toxic relationship with plastics and forge a lasting relationship with sustainable alternatives this Valentine’s Day. In her appeal, Goodwill ambassador of UNEP, Dia Mirza said, “Break up with a plastic bag, replace it with a cloth bag, break up with a plastic straw, replace it with a bamboo, metal or a glass straw, break up with a plastic toothbrush, replace it with a bamboo toothbrush, break up with a ear bud, replace it with a bamboo ear bud, cups, mugs and bottles, have all replaceable alternatives. You just have to find your new love.”

Today, Dia’s appeal has got support from actors Alia Bhatt, Diana Penty, Kalki Koechlin and Jackky Bhagnani and she hopes that soon more people will join the movement.

Ending the relationship with plastics, Alia Bhatt said,

Here’s committing to a cleaner tomorrow! Let’s all break up with single-use plastics for #CleanSeas with @unenvironment.

While Kalki Koechlin shared a picture on her Instagram showing how she broke up with her toxic ex-plastic bottle, she added,

Broke up with my toxic ex, plastic, and working on my sustainable relationship with stainless steel. Find your new love.

Actress Diana Penty on the other hand broke up with her plastic toothbrush that takes 100 of years to decompose, sharing glimpses of her break up, she said,

O! Today I’ve decided to end my toxic relationship with single use plastic. My new love – biodegradable, eco-friendly alternatives. What we’re doing to our planet is serious & I hope we all take whatever steps we can to save it.

Asking people to break up with plastic straws, Actor Jackky Bhagnani said,

Did you know that 500 million plastic straws are used daily in some parts of the world? This Valentine’s Day, break up with plastic straws & fall in love with biodegradable paper straws. Trust me, the planet will love you for it.

The Break-up’ initiative is part of the Clean Seas campaign by UNEP to address the global challenge of plastic pollution that is chocking our oceans. Through the initiative it hopes to reduce the usage of plastic, as it is reaching critical situation where according to an estimate by 2050 there will be more plastic than fishes in the oceans.
