New Delhi: The Coronavirus pandemic and the challenging times are bringing out the best in people of all age groups. From NGOs (non-governmental organisations) stepping up to help migrants by providing ration to people stitching masks and distributing it for free to a friends’ duo offering free oxygen cylinders, almost everyone is chipping in their own way, making the crisis a little easier. Among all the stories of people being generous is a 10-year-old Sindhuri from Karnataka’s Udupi district who recently stitched masks with one hand.
Sindhuri doesn’t have a left hand below her elbow but that didn’t deter her spirit to stitch masks that were distributed among SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) students. Sindhuri, a class 6 student of Mount Rosary English Medium School at Santhekatte Kallianpur, is a scout and guide.
It was the target of scout and guide wings to distribute 1 lakh masks to the SSLC students. I stitched 15 masks. Initially, I was hesitant to stitch with a single hand. My mother supported me to stitch the mask. Now all are appreciating me, said Sindhuri while talking to ANI, a news agency, about her initiative.

Wearing a face mask has become a ‘new normal’ as it’s one of the ways to protect oneself from both contracting the virus and spreading the virus, if someone is infected. The disease spreads primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or speaks. A face mask acts as a barrier. In an effort to ensure everybody resorts to this new normal and has access to face masks, 56-year-old Laxmi Das, a resident of South Delhi stitched cloth masks at home and distributed it among underprivileged people. Taking the initiative forward, Ms Das’s son Sourav Das designed a mask dispenser using cardboard boxes and placed them at various locations in South Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park.

As part of their initiative titled ‘Pick One, Stay Safe’, the mother-son duo has distributed more than 2,200 months in over 2 months for free.
In another move, a Delhi based creative technology solution company called OtherLogic Experiential India (OLE India) has innovated a contactless mask vending machine ‘MaskUpNow’. Innovators say the idea was simply to ensure people have access to masks anytime, anywhere rather than excuses for not wearing a mask.
