Toilet: Ek Prem Katha actress, Bhumi Pednekar hopes that with her upcoming Swachh Bharat Abhiyan themed movie she will encourage lot of women to demand toilets
New Delhi: The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan inspired movie Toilet – Ek Prem Katha actor Bhumi Pednekar aims to start a ‘Toilet-Revolution’ in India with this upcoming film. The story of the film revolves around a married couple Keshav (Akshay Kumar) and Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), who go against all the odds, simply to bring a toilet revolution in their village and discourage the ‘lota gang’ who still think defecating in the open is ‘acceptable’. The need of the hour in India is to bring in a change in people’s mindset and motivate them to use toilets that have been constructed and that is what the new movie Toilet – Ek Prem Katha aims to do. Speaking about this social satire recently, Bhumi said, “It’s time for us to change and evolve as a society and make toilets.”

India is home to some 450 million people who have no access to toilets and who still follow the age-old tradition of open defecation. Since the inception of the Government’s mega Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign on October 2, 2014, India’s sanitation coverage has increased to 64.18% as of July 2017 from mere 41.86%. Still, the road to Swachh India is long, the target of Clean India by 2019 cannot be achieved just by constructing toilets. It needs behavioural change, which is the plot of the film.
Toilet – Ek Prem Katha which has been co-produced by Akshay Kumar and Neeraj Pandey, is set to hit the big screen on August 11.
