Assam Chief Minister Launches A Swachh Movement, To Construct 1 Lakh Toilets To Become Open Defecation Free

‘Mission Sambhab’ launched in Assam in a bid to give every individual their basic right – a toilet. The motto of the initiative is to make Assam ODF by the end of this year

New Delhi: In a bid to get a coveted tag of open defecation free (ODF) state of India by the end of this year, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday launched a special campaign – ‘Mission Sambhab’ (Mission Possible) in Morigaon district. Through the initiative, more than 1 lakh toilets will be constructed in 33 districts of the state that will cover around 219 blocks. Flagging off the campaign by digging a pit for a toilet in the house of Romesh Paharia, a tea garden worker of the Gopal Krishna Tea Estate, CM Sonowal said, “I urge economically stronger sections of the society to inculcate the practice of ‘Sauchalaya Daan’ (Donate a toilet) to the poor. The Swachhata revolution to make Assam open defecation free (ODF) is to be carried forward by all.”

CM Sarbananda Sonowal further added,

In the last 22 months, Assam Government has constructed 15 lakh toilets, making A huge progress towards attaining ODF status. I believe that ‘Mission Sambhab’ will bring about a new era of Swachhata, built on the ideals of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

He also termed this progress as a reflection of the state government’s commitment towards the cause of a clean Assam and exuded confidence that Assam will soon be able to meet its ODF target.

The chief minister Sonowal also gave away his ‘Letter of Contribution’ as part of ‘Daan Toilet’ initiative for construction of toilets for divyangjans (Disabled persons) of the area.

As of date, six out of 35 districts in Assam have been declared open defecation free along with 857 villages and 50 tea gardens covering 23 lakh households.
