A survey conducted by HolidayIQ on World Toilet Day revealed that Kolkata has the smelliest toilets, followed by Delhi (32 per cent), Chennai (29 per cent), Mumbai (29 per cent), Hyderabad (20 per cent), Pune (18 per cent) and Bangalore (14 per cent). 43 per cent of about 10,000 travellers voted for Kolkata being the stinkiest toilet across the country.

Toilets are an essential element in planning holidays, especially in deciding the mode of travel. 70% travellers have said that they have changed their intended holiday destination or mode of travel owing to discomfort with the level of cleanliness.

For women travellers especially, sanitation is a huge priority. As more women travel in India, they demand for more hygienic toilets.

The survey also revealed that there is an urgent need for more toilets near bus stops, railway stations, religious places and government offices.

54% Indian travellers said that there is a need for more toilets in their respective cities and across tourism destinations and sightseeing spots in the country. Railways got the second highest number of votes (41%) on where we need more toilets. 31% at religious places, 25% travellers voted for clean toilets at every 25km on highways, 15% vote for hygiene around beaches.

22% travellers rate pay-and-use toilets as most unclean. Some places that have been voted as lacking cleanliness include Golden Temple, Amritsar; Nandi Hills, Karnataka; Golkonda fort, Hyderabad; Mysore Palace, Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi; Taj Mahal, Agra; Ajanta Ellora caves, Maharashtra; Princep Ghat, Kolkata, Qutab Minar, Delhi; Bada Imambara, Lucknow, Red Fort, Delhi.

Conducted over last week, the survey saw more than 10,000 travellers from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Pune participate.
