From Delhi, Andhra Pradesh To Bihar, ‘Yamraj’ Hits The Streets Of India To Create Awareness About Coronavirus

New Delhi: The total number of Novel Coronavirus cases in India is inching towards 32,000 and parallely the country is edging towards the end of lockdown 2.0 which is in place till May 3. While there is no clarity on whether the lockdown will be relaxed in a phased manner or extended, one thing that is crystal clear is that at this juncture, the only way to stay safe is by staying at home. And in order to reinstate the same message, on Monday (April 27) Delhi Police took the help of a local artist who dressed up as a Yamraj, God of death, to appeal to people to stay indoors.

Making rounds of RK Puram locality, Delhi Police’s Yamraj spread the message of ‘stay home, stay safe’. Creating awareness by the way of instilling fear in people, Yamraj said,

Delhiites, I am giving you the warning, again; if you love your life, stay inside your home and stay safe. Otherwise, coronavirus, my messenger, will take you to yamlok (hell).

Before Delhi Police, cops in other states including Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh have also resorted to similar tactic to ensure citizens adhere to the lockdown.

According to the news agency ANI, after four people in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajam Town tested positive for COVID-19, the district administration sprung into action and resorted to creative ways of spreading awareness. Students dressed up as Yamraj, his assistant Chitragupta and even as the coronavirus to help the local police in this drive.

On April 17, in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, Police Constable Jawahar Singh dressed up as a Yamraj to raise awareness among people. Sitting on the bonnet of the police jeep, Mr Singh took the rounds of the city and said,

No one should step out of their house. If you will venture out, you will contract the coronavirus and then if you will not get treatment, you will have to accompany me to the hell.

The appeal was followed by boisterous laughter resembling that of Yamraj.

On April 15, in Bihar’s Munger, a man dressed up as Yamraj and walked through the streets, reminding people to remain indoors. The God of death was accompanied by the ‘coronavirus demon’. Together, the duo raised slogans about the dangers of stepping out of homes during the lockdown.
