India Reports Over 400 New COVID-19 Cases, Four People Succumb To The Infection

New Delhi: India has logged 405 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases have decreased to 7,104 from 7,623, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday (May 23). The death toll has increased to 5,31,843 with four deaths which includes one reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The Covid-19 case tally was recorded at 4.49 crore. The active cases now comprise 0.02 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.80 per cent, the ministry said.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,44,48,392 and the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18 per cent. According to the ministry’s website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

A day before, the country recorded 756 fresh cases of Covid-19 cases in the previous 24 hours, while the active cases declined to 8,115. The daily positivity rate stood at 0.63 per cent in the last 24 hours, according to data shared by the government’s health department.

In his address to the 76th session of the World Health Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the pandemic showed us the need for greater collaboration in healthcare and the need to boost global health equity.

In his address for the event in Geneva, Switzerland, PM Modi said,

Warm greetings to everyone at the 76th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva. I congratulate the WHO on completing the historic milestone of serving the world for 75 years. I am sure that the WHO would be setting goals for the next 25 years when it reaches 100 years of service.

The Prime Minister said that India shipped 300 million doses of vaccines to over 100 countries showing its commitment during the time of crisis. He further said,

The COVID-19 pandemic showed us the need for greater collaboration in healthcare. The pandemic highlighted many gaps in the global health architecture. Building resilience in global systems needs a collective effort.

PM Modi added,

The pandemic also highlighted a need to boost global health equity. During a crisis, India showed its commitment to international cooperation. We shipped almost 300 million doses to over 100 countries. Many of these countries were from the Global South. I am sure that supporting equal access to resources will be a top priority for the WHO in the coming years.

Maharashtra recorded 24 fresh COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 81,68,913, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,549, a health department official said. The addition to the tally was a drastic fall from the 24 cases reported on Sunday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official added.

The recovery count in the state increased by 22 to touch 80,19,877, leaving the state with 485 active cases, as per official data. As per a state health department report, 1,948 coronavirus tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, taking the overall number of such tests to 8,71,39,710.

In Nashik, the coronavirus cases increased by five to touch 4,83,073 in the last 24 hours, while the death toll stood unchanged at 8,904, an official said. The recovery count increased by three during the day and reached 4,74,159, leaving the district with an active caseload of 10, he added. PTI CORhe district is 10 as of today.
