New Delhi: Congratulating all the Mumbaikars, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis today declared Mumbai Open Defecation Free. ‘Great news for Mumbai! Congratulations to all Mumbaikars, Mumbai becomes Open Defecation Free (ODF). Good job BMC and Shri Ajoy Mehta,’ tweeted Chief Minister Fadnavis. The credit goes to Mumbai’s urban local body – Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation also known as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) who adopted a comprehensive approach to make the city free from the practice of open defecation.

Soon, after the announcement made by the Chief Minister, Twitter started buzzing with reactions.

Actor Pooja Bhatt responded by saying, with all due respect this is in-factual! Do visit Bandstand, Bandra reclamation creek, Versova beach jetty & Sagar Kutir etc. to back up claim.

Shocked by such a big announcement, many people raised their doubts about the ODF status of Mumbai.

Scepticism aside some were pleasantly surprised by the news.

In the recent Swachh Survekshan Greater Mumbai was at 29th position in terms of sanitation and cleanliness. BMC speeded up the process of construction of individual and community toilets in a bid to attain the tag of Open Defecation Free. BMC also roped in the megastar Salman Khan and appointed him as the brand ambassador of the Open Defecation Free campaign of Mumbai. They also launched a creative Swachh Bharat initiative recently named Chakachak Mumbai in which community toilets were given a creative makeover.
