On World Environment Day 2018, A Big ‘Plastic’ Sand Turtle Installation Sends A Message Of #BeatPlasticPollution At Odisha’s Puri Beach
On World Environment Day, Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik creates a first biggest sand sculpture of a Turtle at Odisha’s Puri Beach with plastic bottles to spread awareness on this year’s theme – #BeatPlasticPollution
New Delhi: Thousands of people coming to Puri beach in Odisha on June 5, which is also being celebrated as 45th World Environment Day, witnessed something unique – it was internationally acclaimed sand artist and Padma Awardee, Sudarsan Pattnaik’s first biggest sand sculpture. Sudarsan created a sand turtle art that is 50ft long and 30ft wide. What is unique about this art is that it is made using 300 kilograms of plastic bottles to send out a strong message – #BeatPlasticPollution.
Sharing the art glimpses with the netizens, Sudarsan Pattnaik said,

The art showcases the unfortunate plight of the turtles dying each year due to plastic pollution as they mistake plastics and other garbage as food items. As a result, plastic causes blockages within their digestive system and eventually takes their life. Depicting this grim reality of world’s plastic crisis, the sand artist created this unique sand art.

This is not the first sand art Sudarsan Pattnaik has created for World Environment Day celebrations. A few days ago, the artist created a sand art in New Delhi at the World Environment Day 2018 event to highlight the unfortunate plight of the marine animals due to plastic pollution. On World Turtle Day, Sudarsan created a sand art at Puri beach in Odisha with the same message – Beat Plastic Pollution.
