Open Defecation Is Harmful, Especially For Women. Build And Use Toilets: Anushka Sharma’s Swachh Message

Anushka Sharma is the latest celebrity to be roped in to propagate the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan‘s goals. As the Ambassador of #DarwazaBand campaign which has been launched recently by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation India to bring about behavioural change among people and urge them to defecate behind closed doors and not in the open. Anushka today tweeted, “#OpenDefecation is harmful for everyone, especially for women! Build & use toilets, and support #DarwazaBand.”

About Darwaza Band Initiative
Darwaza Band campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission has been launched to bring in a behavourial change among people and promote the use of toilets. Anushka Sharma along with actor Amitabh Bachchan will educate the masses about how open defecation is harmful for their health and why it is necessary to opt for a toilet.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan So Far
Since the inception of Swachh Bharat campaign in 2014, more than 40 crore toilets have been built. Recently another milestone of around 2 lakh villages been declared Open Defecation Free was achieved . The number of people defecating in the open has reduced from 55 crores in May 2014 to 35 crores in May 2017, but still India has a long way to go to realise its goal of Clean India by 2019.
