New Delhi: The Union Territory in the Western India, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, merged in 2019. While the whole country is struggling, Daman and Diu have managed to remain corona-free. The administration in Daman and Diu have credited the people of the districts as the ‘Corona Warriors’ who have managed to successfully maintain the lockdown in these districts.

We share a border with Gujarat and are situated close to Maharashtra, which happen to be two of the worst affected states in the country. Furthermore, Dadra and Nagar Haveli has reported 19 COVID-19 cases, while Daman and Diu have managed to avoid any cases of the infection. This is all because our public followed the lockdown guidelines very well and there were frontline workers who were also ensuring there are no defaulters, a spokesperson from the Daman and Diu administration told NDTV.

He further said that it is the commitment of their ‘corona warriors’ that has lead to this success, who worked with along with the administration.

We succeeded in making people adhere to the lockdown for 75 days. We managed to have zero cases in Daman and Diu because people followed the lockdown with full commitment. But we remain on a high alert due to the geographical closeness of our districts to Gujarat and Maharashtra, he added.

The spokesperson also shared about that the testing status of the union territory. As of June 9, the UT has tested approximately 18,000 samples for COVID-19 – which includes more than 12,000 from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 5,000 from Daman and about 1,000 from Diu.

Out of these 18,000 samples that we have tested, 19 from Dadra and Nagar Haveli have tested positive for coronavirus, but none from Daman and Diu, the official said.

These samples were collected on the basis of people’s travel history, those who were showing symptoms, and some random samples as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines, the official explained.

More than 6,000 people who were under the mandatory quarantine of 14 days in the UT have completed the same, the official said.

Out of the 6,000, almost 3,500 were in quarantine in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 1,000 in Daman, and 1,605 in Diu. At present, almost 2,300 people are still under quarantine, the official added.

Travels to and from the UT were restricted as per the norms of the lockdown, however, now, with the lockdown being eased, people can enter the border through check post with a valid e-pass, the official said. He further explained that they are still alert and are screening people, advising quarantine to those entering the districts, to ensure the states of zero cases continue in the districts.
