COVID-19 Curbs: To Avoid Disastrous Situation, Assam Tightens Restrictions, Bans Non-Vaccinated People At Public Places

Assam government tightens COVID19 norms in the state

New Delhi: As the northeastern state of Assam on January 24 (Monday) logged 5,902 new COVID-19 cases with 18 fresh fatalities, the Assam government issued an order tightening restriction in the state in a bid to contain the spread of the COVID-19. The restrictions have been put in place from today (January 25) 6am, here is what is allowed and what is not:

1.  The state has banned entry of non-vaccinated people in all the public places, except hospitals.

2. The government has asked citizens to carry proof of vaccination while going to public places  as only then they will be allowed.

3. The government has also directed authorities to shut physical classes in all schools up to class 8 in all districts and educational institutions. For now, they will be migrated to virtual options until further orders.

4. Whereas, classes in schools have been allowed on alternate days for class IX and above in all districts.

5. The order also said that the owners of public/private establishments shall be responsible for ensuring that only those entrants who are fully vaccinated are allowed inside and this has to be done scrupulously by checking their vaccination status.

6. The order also said that the employees who are not fully vaccinated will not be allowed to attend office and they will have to avail leave, if available. If not, extraordinary leave will have to be taken for which they will not be paid salary.

7. In case of marriages and meetings, up to 200 people or 50 per cent of capacity of a venue, whichever is less, will be allowed.

8.  Up to 60 fully vaccinated people will be permitted to enter iconic religious places in an hour, while the limit is 40 for other such places.

9.  Those who have received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will be allowed to enter cinema and theatre halls but the maximum entry is restricted to only 50 per cent of the seating capacity of these facilities.

10. The night curfew in the state will continue from 10 pm to 6 am across the state and all workplaces and commercial establishments will have to be shut down by 9 pm.

Taking about why new curbs have been put in place, officiating Chief Secretary P K Borthakur said,

The status of COVID-19 in the state has again been reviewed and it has been observed that the number of COVID-19 cases has been gradually increasing over the last few days thereby increasing the positivity rate.

The order also added that failure to do any of these restrictions shall attract penal action.
