From Railways To Colleges, People Across India Join National Cleanliness Programme Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath
People from all walks of life, from politicians to students, took up brooms and participated in the campaign in response to the Prime Minister’s appeal
New Delhi: In a recent episode of “Mann Ki Baat”, Modi appealed for “one hour of Shramdaan (voluntary labour) for Swachhata” on October 1 by all citizens, saying it would be a “Swachhanjali” to Gandhi on the eve of his birth anniversary. People from all walks of life, from politicians to students, took up brooms and participated in the campaign in response to the Prime Minister’s appeal.
Shramdaan’ Events Held In Universities
The programme titled ‘Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath’ was organised in the universities at 10 am to celebrate nine years of the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’. The Delhi University participated in the initiative by carrying out a cleanliness drive at two sites namely C G Narang Marg and Patel Chest at the North campus in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. In Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), teachers, students, and NCC cadets led by officiating Vice Chancellor Eqbal Hussain participated in the drive organised at the central canteen and adjoining areas of the varsity.
JMI Registrar Professor Nazim Hussain Jafri and other officers of the university also participated in the programme coordinated by the varsity’s sanitation department. The cleanliness drive was also organised across regional centres of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in different states. The purpose of the drive was to promote ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (people’s participation) for a garbage free India.

Cleanliness Drive At Geological Survey of India
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) on Sunday organised cleanliness campaigns at 30 public places, and all its offices across the country as part of the nationwide “swachhata drive” of the central government. The 30 locations were selected from all parts of the country – from Srinagar in the north to Trivandrum in the south and from Gujarat in the west to Itanagar in the east, the GSI said in a statement here.
The places include markets, temples, bus stands, residential colonies, office complexes, public parks and gardens as well as national monuments and geo-heritage sites.
‘14 Minutes Miracle’ Cleanliness Challenge
Vande Bharat Express trains were cleaned in just 14 minutes as part of the ‘14 Minutes Miracle’ challenge at railway stations in Chennai. The ‘14 Minutes Miracle’ challenge was done at Chennai Central Railway Station and Chennai Egmore Railway Station.
14-minute miracle” scheme was launched today at Terminal Stations across Indian Railways as part of the ‘Swachhata-Hi-Seva’ campaign. Eerya Bhukya Vishwanath, Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railway, said the challenge at Chennai stations was successful. Mr Vishwanath said,
We completed it in 14 minutes time. This way we can quickly take to the next destination and we will save time. For cleaning, We have engaged four employees each per coach.
Union minister of state for railways, Darshana Jardosh, who is on a three-day visit to Visakhapatnam, on Sunday participated in the ‘Swachchta Hi Seva’ program organised by Waltair Division at Visakhapatnam railway station.
The ’14-minute Miracle Cleaning’ drive was carried out on the Rani Kamalapati-Hazrat Nizamuddin Vande Bharat Express train here in the national capital on Sunday. The cleaning drive was conducted at New Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station as part of the launch of the cleaning process for all Vande Bharat Express services across the country.
The fast-cleaning drill is aimed at cutting down the turn-around time of the Vande Bharat trains.
Ladakh Cleanliness Drive
Lt Governor Brig (retd) B D Mishra on Sunday flagged off a cleanliness drive on the occasion of ‘Swachhata Diwas’ under the theme of ‘Garbage-Free Ladakh’. The ”Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ initiative which started from Leh’s main market was aimed at bringing about visible improvements in hygiene and sanitation, an official spokesperson said. The L-G said and commended the people of Ladakh for preserving the rich tradition, heritage and culture of the region. He said,
Today’s cleanliness drive should not remain notional or an act of demonstration. Rather, the day should be celebrated as a day of duty and determination.
Municipal Corporation Of Delhi Holds Cleanliness Drive At 500 Locations
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi organised events at more than 500 locations as part of the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign, officials said here. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena offered ‘shramdaan’ on Jagatpuri Road from Bihari Colony to the Krishna Nagar metro station along the Shahdara Trunk Drain-1 in the Shahdara South Zone. All wings of the MCD participated in the hour-long activities, as part of the mega cleanliness drive being undertaken across the nation, on the eve of the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
AIIMS Delhi Participates In “Swachhata Hi Seva” Campaign
The day began with the sun casting a hopeful light on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi where volunteers dedicated themselves to cleaning and beautifying different areas, tackling challenges such as the removal of garbage, horticulture waste, construction debris, and other waste materials.
The day also witnessed the transformation of external walls with vibrant slogans and murals, adding an artistic dimension to the drive.
The Central Lawn at AIMS became a focal point for dedicated volunteers from all walks of life, who gathered with one common goal – to make a tangible difference.
In the Foyer, participants received registration assistance and were honored with commemorative T-shirts, symbolising their role as champions of cleanliness. The event was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries who joined hands with all participants to take the Swachhata Pledge, a solemn oath affirming their unwavering commitment to cleanliness and hygiene.
Cleanliness Drive In Lakshadweep
The cleanliness drive was carried out by the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and the Lakshadweep Pollution Control Committee, a release issued by the administration said.
During the cleanup initiative, a lot of glass and plastic bottles, tyres, woven bags, plastic bags, fishing nets, clothes hangers, shoes and lots of household garbage were collected from the lagoons and beaches and handed over to the panchayat authorities for being transported to the Common Depository Site, the release said.
Union minister Smriti Irani on Sunday flew down to northern West Bengal and participated in cleanliness drive ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ drive a day before Gandhi Jayanti. On the other hand, the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also participated in the drive in Howrah city.
Minister Irani flew down to Bagdogra airport on the outskirts of Siliguri city. She was welcomed by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and party workers. From there, she went to a tea garden in Naxalbari, where she cleaned the surroundings by picking up garbage from the ground and also interacted with tea garden workers.
BSF Troops Participate In Nationwide Cleanliness Drive
On the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nationwide participation in a cleanliness drive on October 1, BSF troops (Seema Praharis), led by Nitin Agrawal, IPS, DG BSF, came together with civilians to clean up railway tracks, bus stands, tourist locations, market places, roadsides, under bridges, ghats, etc. at various locations of the country, according to a press release by the BSF.
As a contribution from Seema Praharis in this nationwide cleanliness drive, around 100 km of railway tracks, 200 km of roadsides, and 322 sites of market-places, tourist locations, bus stands, under bridges, ghats, etc. were cleaned. Around 27,000 Seema Praharis and 57,000 volunteers participated in the mega cleanliness drive all over India.
350 Policemen Join In Cleanliness Drives
Several establishments, including government and civic offices, public institutions, educational institutes and the police department, in Maharashtra’s Palghar and Thane districts held cleanliness drives on Sunday as part of a nationwide campaign. DCP Sanjay Patil of Navi Mumbai police said that more than 350 cops participated in the cleanliness drive at their police headquarters.
Department Of Agriculture Organises Cleanliness Drive
The Department of Agriculture on Sunday organised a cleanliness drive at the Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC) building here. The Department, which is under the Union Agriculture Ministry, along with subordinate offices participated in the “Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath” initiative, under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, an official statement said.
Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja flagged off the cleanliness drive at SFAC building in Siri Institutional Area, Hauz Khas.

Banega Swasth India will also be taking forward the dream of Swasth Bharat, the campaign feels that only a Swachh or clean India wheretoiletsare used andopen defecation free (ODF)status achieved as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched byPrime Minister Narendra Modiin 2014, can eradicate diseases like diahorrea and the country can become a Swasth or healthy India.
