When he launched the 4th season of the NDTV-Dettol Banega Swachh India campaign on Thursday morning, campaign ambassador Amitabh Bachchan spoke about how children can influence people around them and bring about real change. He was referring to the critical need for more citizens to start managing their waste better, to reduce the burden on landfills and the environment.

The Sri Sri Academy in Kolkata is the perfect example of how one can never be too young to start spreading the Swachh message and the power of children in keeping the environment clean.

Each and every student of this school practices waste segregation

At this school, children are aware of the importance of segregating waste into different categories like food waste, dry waste, plastic, glass, foils and e-waste. Plastic bottles and cardboard boxes are often used in the Art & Craft classes and turned into beautiful objects. Food waste like fruit and vegetable peels go into the compost pit in the school ground.

Each and every student of this school believes in this programme and we carry this philosophy back home as well, says Abhay Mudgil, a student who spoke to NDTV about how the compost plant in the school has helped them manage waste is an eco-friendly manner.

The waste is segregated into food waste, dry waste, plastic, glass, foils and e-waste.

The inspiration for caring and giving back comes from our founder and mentor Sri Sri. His philosophy and compassion for the environment and all living beings runs through the school curriculum, Principal Suvina Shunglu told NDTV.

We try and reuse whatever waste is generated. Someday the world will be full of garbage if we don’t act now, says Aditya Joshi who showed off the how the school was making decorative and daily use items from recycled paper and plastic waste.

The school has adopted these practices and is even conserving water discharged by air conditioners. This water is then used for gardening and cleaning the school, thereby helping in saving water and conserving the environment.

Plastic bottles and cardboard boxes are often used in the Art & Craft classes and turned into beautiful objects.

We have air-conditioned classrooms. We collect the water and stop it from draining away which we reuse for gardening and cleaning and that is how we reduce consumption of a valuable natural resource, Swagata Hazra, a student added.

The school also sends all its used paper to a mill where it is recycled. The students say they are doing it for their own future and want other school to adopt such practices too.
