On World Environment Day, Actor Dia Mirza Shares Tips On How One Can Start To Refuse Single-Use Plastics
On World Environment Day, Actor Dia Mirza urges people to start refusing single-use plastic by making a switch to sustainable alternatives
New Delhi: Dia Mirza, Actor, Eco-investor, UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador & UN Secretary-General’s Advocate For Sustainable Development Goals, who is known for her environment-conscious choices, marks the occasion of World Environment Day by sharing a short video on her social media platform. In the video, the actor is seen highlighting tips on how one can start refusing single-use plastics in their day-to-day life.
Explaining her sustainable choices in life and things she carry in her bag, the actor in her video mentions that the world generates 400 million tonnes of plastic every year and one of the best ways, we all can beat plastic pollution is by refusing single-use plastics from our daily life. Sharing an example of things she carry in her bag always, Ms Mirza said, “I have my travelling bottle in my bag always so that I never have to use a disposable water bottle. I have a bag within a bag, it is my shopping bag. It always stay within my bag so that I can refuse single-use plastic bags. Next is something very special to me, a pen made using bamboo and seeds so that I can grow them when I am done using it. Next is my jaggery that travels with me wherever I go, so I never have to use sugar from sachets. My own travelling glass for tea and coffee on the go. Washable and reusable mask, cutlery and biodegradable sanitary napkins made using biodegradable materials and is completely plastic free.”

Ms Mirza further urged users to make these easy sustainable switch for a healthier tomorrow, she said, “If you can make these easy switches, it is great as this will help beat plastic pollution.”

In the same post, sharing statistics with the world, Ms Mirza said, “Around the world, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed for single-use purposes – used just once and then thrown away.Use your choice: Buy things that don’t end up in our ocean. Use your voice. The best way to tackle plastic pollution is to prevent it in the first place. For the sake of future generations, we must reduce, reuse, rethink, and redesign to #BeatPlasticPollution.”
This is not one of the first time, when Ms Mirza has been vocal about her sustainable choices. Recently, Ms Mirza also celebrated her son, Avyaan Azad Rekhi’s second birthday in a sustainable – Zero Waste and Plastic Free way. Not just that, back in 2021, Ms Mirza tied the knot with Vaibhav Rekhi in a completely sustainable manner, with hand-crafted gift bags, reusable clothes, no food wastage, green and eco-friendly decoration and zero plastic.

The world marks June 5 every year as World Environment Day, this year marks the 15th iteration of the annual celebration of the planet. This year, the day once again will be focusing on the plastic pollution crisis with the theme #BeatPlasticPollution. The aim of the day is to bring back the focus on solutions to plastic pollution.

Our environment is fragile due to human activity, which is not only over-exploiting available resources, but also generating immense pollution as a result of using and extracting those resources. The imbalance has also led to immense biodiversity loss that has caused one of the biggest threats to human survival – climate change. It has now been described as a “code red for humanity.” The campaign will continue to cover issues like air pollution, waste management, plastic ban, manual scavenging and sanitation workers and menstrual hygiene. Banega Swasth India will also be taking forward the dream of Swasth Bharat, the campaign feels that only a Swachh or clean India where toilets are used and open defecation free (ODF) status achieved as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, can eradicate diseases like diahorrea and the country can become a Swasth or healthy India.
