Wider Roads At The Cost Of Clean Air?

Published On: July 5, 2018 | Duration: 21 MIN, 45 SEC
Delhi's residents celebrated a Delhi High Court ruling yesterday about the stay on the felling of 16,000 trees for the redevelopment of 6 South Delhi colonies. However, despite that court order not all of Delhi's green cover is safe. This tree has been cut after the order in a few government colonies. Ironically, this is barely a kilometer from the court. Officials point out that the two cases are separate and there's no ban on cutting these trees to make a six-lane tunnel from Delhi's famous Pragati Maidan to the Ring Road. Another irony - despite the bitter fight between the Lt Governor and Arvind Kejriwal's government, both have jointly cleared this tree-felling, tunnel project. Can the world's most polluted city afford to lose its trees?
