New Delhi: “Do you bit, do not spit,” says actor Bhumi Pednekar who launched an anti-spitting campaign that aims at educating people about how spitting can also lead to the spread of COVID-19. The actor took to social media to announce the initiative, ‘Spit Free India Movement,’ for which she has collaborated with the non-profit organisation Pledge For Life. Ms Pednekar shared a video where she urged her followers to join the spit-free India campaign, and said,
We have to defeat Coronavirus and everyone has to join hands. We need to leave the habit of spitting because we have to save our country. Currently, our country is under the threat of Coronavirus and the fatal disease also spreads by spitting.

She further spoke about her previous social campaign related to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, that encouraged people to avoid open defecation and use toilets instead. She added,
The way we all came together to get associated with the toilet campaign in the past and pledged to make the country swachh, similarly, let’s pledge to make the country Corona free, by avoiding to spit here and there.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), spitting can cause the spread of COVID-19 as the saliva of an infected person can carry the virus for more than 24 hours.
The Spit Free India Movement, encourages people to stop using tobacco as it leads to spitting which can spread the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Most states in India, like Haryana, West Bengal, Delhi, among others have started imposing fines on people who are found spitting at public places. These fines vary between Rs. 500 – 2000 and each state has given the power to the authorities and police departments to impose these fines if they catch people spitting.
