New Delhi: April 22 is observed as World Earth Day, with an aim to promote environmental protection. The day was first observed on April 22, 1970, and each year, it is celebrated with different themes. The theme for the day this year is ‘Restore our Earth’. This year, several Ministers, Bollywood celebrities and Cricketers stepped forward to raise awareness about the importance of saving and restoring earth.

Dia Mirza is well known for her passion for environment. Her relentless efforts to raise awareness about environmental conservation were noted by UN when they appointed her as the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador on Climate Change. Moreover, Ms Mirza is also United Nations Secretary-General Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals.

On the occasion of Earth Day, Ms Mirza took to Twitter to say that human suffering can and will be reduced only and only if we come together for climate action.

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan, asserted that there is no Planet B, he tweeted,

There is no Planet B! Taking care of this one is upto us! This #pandemic is another reminder of the urgency to move on a cleaner, greener path to #RestoreOurEarth & sustain all life on it.

Actor Neha Dhupia urged her followers to stay home owing to the surge in COVID-19 cases across the nation.

Cricketer KL Rahul also tweeted about preserving the Earth, he said,

For a long time we have been taking our planet for granted. Let’s be considerate, appreciative and work towards preserving our environment. Each one of us has a responsibility to help save the earth, and it’s time we carry out that responsibility. #EarthDay

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Union Minister of State for Chemical and Fertilizers, also tweeted to raise awareness about Earth Day.

Earth is our Mother and we are her children. Expressing our deepest gratitude to Mother Earth, Let’s pledge to fulfill our responsibilities and ‘Restore Our Earth’ for our future generations.

NDTV – Dettol Banega Swasth India campaign is an extension of the five-year-old Banega Swachh India initiative helmed by Campaign Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan. It aims to spread awareness about critical health issues facing the country. In wake of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the need for WASH (WaterSanitation and Hygiene) is reaffirmed as handwashing is one of the ways to prevent Coronavirus infection and other diseases. The campaign highlights the importance of nutrition and healthcare for women and children to prevent maternal and child mortality, fight malnutrition, stunting, wasting, anaemia and disease prevention through vaccines. Importance of programmes like Public Distribution System (PDS), Mid-day Meal Scheme, POSHAN Abhiyan and the role of Aganwadis and ASHA workers are also covered.
