New Delhi: “Plastic, plastic everywhere, not a land to see.” This may soon turn into a reality if we do not limit our consumption of plastic. According to Euromonitor International’s global packaging trends report, more than 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were sold in 2016 across the world as opposed to 300 billion sold in 2004. By 2021, this figure will rise to a whopping 583.3 billion. Banning plastic, adopting eco-friendly alternatives to plastic may tackle the problem to some extent, but what about the plastic already in use? About 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is produced in India, of which about 9,000 tonnes is recycled. The remaining plastic waste still exists in some form, cluttering landfills and clogging drains.
