Puducherry: Puducherry will institute an award for the cleanest village in the Union Territory, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said on Sunday.
This is to recognise the efforts of the villagers in making their hamlet clean and hygienic. The award will be presented during the Republic Day celebrations, she said at a meeting with the residents of Veerampattinam village.
Ms Bedi has been visiting rural areas during the weekends as part of her “Swachh Puducherry Mission”.
Stressing on the need to segregate solid waste at its source and to make the environment clean and hygienic, she said, this will have a cascading effect on conserving the funds spent for cleaning. The funds can be used for various socio-economic developmental projects.
Earlier, she visited Uruvayaru and Kanuapet villages in Villianoor commune panchayat limits.
