This time, 2019 Swachh Survekshan assessed 4,237 cities of India and 62 Cantonment board in a record time of 28 days. It is being touted as the world’s largest cleanliness survey by the government and is the fourth such survey done by the centre to evaluate the progress cities have made in achieving the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan goals.
Here’s How Indore Became India’s Cleanest City
From becoming one of India’s first city to attain the title of Open Defecation Free Plus Plus (ODF ++), which means total sanitation in terms of solid waste management in addition to open defecation free tag to ensuring 100 per cent waste segregation at source, and clearing out its Devguradiya landfill site with 15 lakh tonnes of legacy waste in order to become a no landfill city, Indore has set a successful swachh example and has gone all out to consistently stay on top of the Swachh Leaderboard.
One of the reasons why Indore has continued to retain its cleanest city of India title is the way it has been managing the waste – be it in terms of composting or recycling. Currently, Indore boosts of 100 per cent waste segregation and is also one of the only cities in the country that has 36,000 households managing their own organic waste. Moreover, even the city’s bulk generators are managing their own waste and helping the city adhere to its swachh goal.
The city is also known for converting waste from its biggest vegetable mandis into CNG. Currently, Indore is generating 1400 kgs of CNG per day and sustaining 15 of its Urban Local Bodies bus transportation services through it. Along with this, plastic waste from the city is being successfully collected and converted into diesel. The CITY’S treatment plant is able to process 8 tonnes of plastic every day and give 3500 litres of diesel on a daily basis.

NDTV – Dettol Banega Swachh India campaign lends support to the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Helmed by Campaign Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, the campaign aims to spread awareness about hygiene and sanitation, the importance of building toilets and making India open defecation free (ODF) by October 2019, a target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014. Over the years, the campaign has widened its scope to cover issues like air pollution, waste management, plastic ban, manual scavenging and menstrual hygiene. The campaign has also focused extensively on marine pollution, clean Ganga Project and rejuvenation of Yamuna, two of India’s major river bodies.
