Garbage Management Crisis: How Effective Are Waste To Energy Treatment Plants?
Waste-to-energy (WTE) plants burn municipal solid waste (MSW) that the city generates to produce electricity. India got the first WTE plant in 1987 in Timarpur, Delhi. But it ran for just 21 days before it was shut down due to poor quality of incoming waste. Since then, 14 more WTE plants of 130 MW capacities have been installed in the country. Out of these, half have already been closed down and the remaining are under scrutiny for environmental violations. Team Banega Swasth India spoke with environmental experts to understand some of the problems WTE plants in India.
