The Need To Normalise The Conversation Around Contraceptives
India's family planning programme is not just a population control programme but also about improving health of women and children. Unfortunately nearly 95% Indian men don't use condoms and the burden of family planning is almost exclusively on women.The health and well-being of people at all ages lies at the heart of sustainable development. An important target under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) states 'By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes.'
Despite India's "young" population, condom sales have increased only at the rate of 1 per cent per year for the last couple of years. Condom Alliance aims to improve reproductive wellbeing by driving behavioral change amongst the youth, encouraging them to use condoms.
