Lucknow:  To mark the auspicious day of ‘Ganga Jayanti or re-birth of Ganga, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed all the districts and village panchayats situated on the banks of Ganga river to observe ‘Ganga Swachhta Sankalp Diwas’ on May 2. The ‘Swachhta’ drive organised by the National Mission for Clean Ganga will be held across 12 locations – Rishikesh, Haridwar, Srinagar, Devprayag, Allahabad, Varanasi,  Raj Ghat( Chhibramau Hardoi), Bithoor (Kanpur), Vidur Kuti (Bijnore), Unnao, Garhmukteshwar, Anupshahar, Narora, Roobhi, Bhagwanpur, Patna, Sultanganj (Bhagalpur), Begusarai,  Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah and Sahibganj.

In pursuance with the orders of the chief minister, Chief Secretary Rahul Bhatnagar has directed the district magistrates to observe the ‘Ganga Swachhta Sankalp Diwas’ on May 2 at 8 am. Efforts should be made to make this a grand event, a state government spokesperson told PTI on April 29.

Besides the pledge taking ceremony to protect river Ganga, a series of events like rally, shramdaan, sankalp will be organised to create awareness on maintaining cleanliness in Ganga by involving citizens in the ambitious project – Namami Gange.

The chief secretary has asked the district magistrates to ensure that they participate in the pledge-taking event at one of the places.

The spokesperson said orders in this regard have been sent to district magistrates of Allahabad, Ballia, Bijnor, Badaun, Bulandshahr, Chandauli, Farrukhabad, Fatehpur, Ghazipur, Hapur, Hardoi, Amroha, Kannauj, Kanpur, Kasganj, Kaushambhi, Meerut, Mirzapur, Muzaffarnagar, Pratapgarh, Rae Bareli, Bhadohi, Shahjahanpur, Unnao and Varanasi.

On April 29, CM Adityanath, while addressing party works in Gorakhpur, had said that the state government will hold special cleanliness programmes at 785 villages located on the banks of Ganga on May 2.
