New Delhi: Moved by the efforts of PadMan actor Akshay Kumar, urging for better menstrual hygiene, Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Anurag Thakur came in support and launched a campaign to provide affordable sanitary napkins to woman and girls of his constituency. Announcing the launch of the campaign, Mr Thakur shared a video on the social media platform and said, “As a Parliamentarian, I’m taking a decisive step to end the stigma and whispers around sanitary napkins. Women’s health and hygiene are of immense importance. Time to act now. Period. Full support to my friend @akshaykumar.”

In the video, he shared the plan of action and the motive behind the campaign. He said,
Akshay Kumar has made a good start to create awareness about sanitary napkins in the country. Even today more than 40% of menstruating women opt for traditional alternatives like cloth, sand, husk instead of sanitary napkins.
Talking about the steps to be taken to provide sanitary napkins to every women of his constituency, he added,
With the help of Self Help Groups and Mahila Mandals, I am getting a low-cost sanitary napkin making machine installed. The cheap and good quality sanitary napkins will be distributed to every house so that every girl and women can get over the practice of using traditional unhygienic alternatives and adopt hygienic sanitary napkins.
Mr Thakur urged citizens of the country to come forward and help bring a change in the society.
Impressed by the efforts of Mr Thakur, Sonam Kapoor, PadMan actor, acknowledged him and said, “Thank you for the vote of confidence Anurag! We’ve been working very hard to raise awareness about this issue and I’m sure your support will go a long way.”

On the same lines, the #PadManChallenge initiated by real PadMan Arunachalam Muruganantham on Friday (February 2) has gone viral with people from all walks of life joining the challenge and posting a picture of themselves hodling a sanitary napkin and captioned it as “Yes, that’s a Pad in my hand and there’s nothing to be ashamed about it. It’s natural! Period. #StandByHer.” From Bollywood to netizens, everyone is coming up with different ways to show their support to PadMan and menstrual hygiene.
