COVID 19 caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus, is highly infectious and is said to spread through people to people contact when droplets discharged from sneezing or coughing by someone who is infected, lands on someone or on surfaces, which is then touched by others. The only way to contain the spread of COVID19 is said to be social distancing – maintaining at least one-metre gap between people, following coughing etiquettes by using tissue which is discarded properly and frequent washing of hands.
The symptoms of COVID19 are coughing, sneezing, fever and breathlessness. But given that it is a new virus, a lot remains to be discovered, including a cure or vaccine. With the outbreak showing no signs of relenting and governments around the world imposing restrictions and lockdowns on people’s movements, lots of misinformation and disinformation have emerged around the pandemic. These range from how it started, how it transmits to quick-fix solutions and home remedies to cure the infection. The problem of false news being spread has become so serious that WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom called it an infodemic.
