To reduce the overall burden of garbage on landfills, Madhya Pradesh will soon install waste-to-compost plants across the state

A Push Towards Composting: Madhya Pradesh To Implement Source Segregation In 131 Cities

The Madhya Pradesh government recently announced that it will soon install waste-to-compost plants in 131 cities across the state. The decision came in after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister for Urban Development and Housing in New Delhi on Wednesday. Chief Minister Chouhan and Mr Naidu discussed about several development projects including metro projects in Indore and Bhopal. The talks later moved over to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The Chief Minister thanked Mr. Naidu for his suggestions in ways to maintain the ‘swachhta’ status.

The duo also spoke about solid waste management. Mr. Naidu tweeted a picture and announced that the Madhya Pradesh government will soon start source segregation of municipal solid waste. Indore will be the first city to get a waste-to-compost plant.

“Met MP CM @ChouhanShivraj discussed progress of urban projects, will launch Segregation of Waste at source in 131 cities from Indore soon.”

To bring a behavioral change, many cities of Madhya Pradesh including Bhopal and Indore have started a door-to-door collection of garbage. The municipal trucks have internally created compartments of biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes to ease segregation at dumping yards.

The idea of composting is not new for Indore which has already been practicing composting at a smaller scale for a while now. A few months back the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) had started a pilot project of composting the waste generated from wholesale vegetable markets or mandis. In coming few months, the civic body will install composting pits in public places like schools, temples, wedding halls, etc said an official from IMC. Indore has recently been crowned as the cleanest city in the country in the Swachh Survekshan 2017.
