Swachh Survekshan 2018 Results: Top 10 Highlights
Swachh Survekshan 2018, which was the first pan Indian exercise to assess cleanliness in urban India, surveyed 4,203 cities from January 4 to March 10, 2018
New Delhi: Indore is India’s cleanest city for second year in a row, followed by Bhopal which this year is again ranked second after Indore. Number 3 is Chandigarh, which last year was ranked 11. The results of the Swachh Survekshan 2018 were announced today by Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri. The survey covered all cities of India, a total of 4,203, covering a population of 40 crores.

Here are the top highlights of the Swachh Survekshan 2018:
- Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been declared the cleanest city in India. Madhya Pradesh’s capital Bhopal ranked as India’s second cleanest city for two years in a row. Chandigarh is the third cleanest city.
- Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh found a special mention as the fastest moving big city for improving its Rank to 36 from Rank 351 in 2017.
- Jharkhand has been declared the best performing state, followed by Maharashtra, in this year’s Swachh Survekshan.
- Cleanest State Capital: Greater Mumbai
- Cleanest City (Population >10 lakh): Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
- Cleanest City (Population 3-10 lakh): Mysuru, Karnataka
- Cleanest City (Population 1-3 lakh): NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council)
- Best city in Innovation and Best practices: Nagpur
- Best city in Solid Waste Management: Navi Mumbai
- India’s Cleanest City Zone-Wise:
North: Bhadson, Punjab
East: Bundu, Jharkhand
North-East: Kakching, Manipur
South: Siddipet, Telangana
West: Panchgani, Maharashtra
In terms of sanitation coverage across the country, Mr Puri said that about 2,133 cities and urban local bodies have been certified as ODF and 2,679 cities have self-declared themselves as ODF and await certification. The government’s target was to construct 67 lakh toilets and as of May 16 over 53 lakh toilets have been constructed, the minister said. Given that the objective of the Swachh Bharat Mission is making India 100 per cent open defecation free (ODF) by October 2, 2019 and implement 100 per cent scientific solid waste management, the Minister also spoke about the status of solid waste management in the country. Across the country, 36 percent municipal wards are practicing source segregation, 145 waste to compost plants are operational with a capacity to process 63 lakh tonnes of waste. Another 105 plants are going to be built.
