Assam

Assam has launched the precautionary COVID-19 vaccine dose from today. NDTV’s Ratnadip Choudhury spoke to Dr Abhijit Sarma, Medical Superintendent, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital who said that they are well prepared to administer the third dose and people are turning up in good numbers.

We are feeling very good about it. We got an SMS about the third dose yesterday and we felt, we are very fortunate that things are so streamlined. I called up my doctor here who asked me to come in the morning and take the third dose. Everybody is very happy about it and so is my husband, said one of the beneficiaries.

News agency ANI spoke to some of the beneficiaries who showed enthusiasm on getting the precaution dose. Mahendra Pandey, a beneficiary at RML Hospital said,

On March 30, I received my second dose of covaxin. Today I have got a booster dose. It is a good initiative of the government to give booster doses to the frontline workers and senior citizens with comorbidities especially at a time when there is a third wave of COVID. In such a situation, it will work as a shield to senior citizens and we welcome the government’s decison wholeheartedly. My mother-in-law and I came to take the booster dose and we both didn’t face any problem after the vaccination. It will provide immunity to us.

Kamla Joshi, another beneficiary at RML hospital said, “Today I have received my booster dose. It is a great move. We welcome this move. I am above 80 years old and I didn’t face any problem after getting my dose.”

We all need to take vaccines so that the spread of infection decreases. I have got the Covishield vaccine. But anyone can take any vaccine. Both Covishield or Covaxin are equally effective. There are slight chances of getting a fever after vaccination. But it doesn’t mean that we get scared and do not take the vaccination. Frontline workers should take this dose as they are exposed constantly, said Dr Piyush Ranjan, a healthcare worker as well as a beneficiary at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

A drive through COVID ‘precaution dose’ was organised at Moolchand Hospital in the city.

Along with the health of people, the campaign has realised the need to also take care of the health of the eco-system. Our environment is fragile due to human activity,  that is not only over-exploiting available resources, but also generating immense pollution as a result of using and extracting those resources. The imbalance has also led to immense biodiversity loss that has caused one of the biggest threats to human survival – climate change. It has now been described as a “code red for humanity.” The campaign will continue to cover issues like air pollutionwaste managementplastic banmanual scavenging and sanitation workers and menstrual hygiene. Banega Swasth India will also be taking forward the dream of Swasth Bharat, the campaign feels that only a Swachh or clean India where toilets are used and open defecation free (ODF) status achieved as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, can eradicate diseases like diahorrea and the country can become a Swasth or healthy India.
