New Delhi: ‘From the land to mountains and sea, let’s keep our country litter free,’ with this mantra, a nationwide campaign Swachhata Hi Seva was launched on Friday. The initiative that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and launched by President Ram Nath Kovind has now reached the Siachen Glacier. With the temperature in minus 3 degree as of today, the Siachen Brigade every morning till October 2, with their white snow-protecting costumes on, will cleanup parts of the Siachen glacier located at an altitude of 9500 ft – 21000 ft. The cleanliness drive is part of their Swachh Bharat Abhiyan efforts and will continue for 15-days as a part of their Swachhata Hi Seva initiative.
During the cleanliness drive it will be ensured that none of the waste is burned which can affect the environment of Siachen Glacier. The Northern Command will also ensure that the Glacier remains free from dirt, garbage, and litter, this is the Siachen Brigade’s way to support the mega cleanliness drive that’s happening across India in a bid to celebrate October 2 as ‘Clean October 2’.
The cleanliness drive has been started there as a part of the oath that was taken by the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday while launching the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign in Delhi Cantonment area, she said,
(If) we can send Mangalyaan to Mars and provide services to the world through our IT sector than why we cannot keep our environment clean. As a part of Swachhta Hi Seva campaign, my ministry will run a campaign to remove trash from high altitude areas and glaciers. All the trash left by tourists at high-altitude areas, mountains will be cleaned in the coming days.
Cleaning up trash from high-altitude areas like mountains and glaciers is important yet often is neglected due to extreme temperatures and living conditions there. Despite the difficult surroundings, Siachen brigade aims to set an example for the world to see by doing their bit for the environment.
