Dr Kiran Bedi, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, pulled up airport officials in Chennai for “improper maintenance” of toilets in the VIP lounge. Dr Bedi, who has been quite vocal about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and is also spearheading the #SwachhPuducherry mission, arrived at the airport from Delhi, and got upset after she visited a toilet in the lounge and found it to be ‘unclean’, airport sources said.
She pulled up offcials, who then immediately deployed sanitary workers to clean up the toilet and spray freshners. Dr Bedi then told officials that toilets needed to be maintained in a hygienic manner, the sources said.
The former IPS officer has been organising swachh cycle rallies, shramdaan and has been making week-end-visits to suburban and rural areas of Puducherry ever since she assumed charge on May 29, 2016, as part of her mission to ensure that Puducherry emerged as the cleanest Union Territory.
Notably, the Chennai International Airport is the fourth busiest airport in India after Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, in terms of international passengers. In fiscal year 2016-17, the airport handled over 18.3 million passengers, and witnesses over 400 aircraft movements per day.
Cleanliness at airports across India, is being managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). It also conducts Swachh Bharat Pakhwara and urges its officials to contribute to the Swachh Bharat mission by maintaining cleanliness in all areas.
