Air Pollution: Delhiites Get Ready To Bike Through The Town As NDMC Launches Public Bike Sharing Service

New Delhi Municipal Corporation has launched a Public Bike Sharing system with 50 bike stations in the New Delhi area and as per its chairman 200 additional Smart Bikes will be added to the fleet by end of this month

New Delhi: “New Delhi has geared up to change the lifestyle of Delhiites by adopting cycling to bridge the gap of last-mile-connectivity and reduce the air pollution with overall fitness improvement,” said Mr. Naresh Kumar, Chairman, New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) during the launch of the Public Bike Sharing System (PBS) on Saturday. Mr. Kumar informed that almost 300 Smart Bikes are already plying across the city. Citizens have been availing these bicycles from 50 stations, spread over entire New Delhi area and the number of bicycles will soon be increased.

200 additional Smart Bikes are to be added in the fleet by the end of December 2018, Mr. Kumar informed.

According to Mr. Kumar, the use of cycling is popularising among the masses by the day, which appears as a positive symptom for a lifestyle change by maintaining the fitness of the commuters as well as combatting air pollution.

Smart Bike is of German origin with features like App and user friendly tariff

People who wish to avail the bike facility can simply do so by registering on the NDMC Mobile App called “NDMC-311”. After registration, cyclists may unlock the bicycle by entering the OTP on the touch pad located at the back of the cycle. This app based system records the time when the bike is unlocked and charges the user fee accordingly, Mr. Kumar explained the logistics to NDTV.

As per the Vice President and Treasurer of World Cycling Alliance, Mr. D.V. Manohar, Smart Bike is of German origin with state-of-art features like App and user friendly tariff. Smart Bike has its Assembly Plant in Hyderabad and planning to set up another in Delhi.

The charges for the bike sharing facility will be available at free of cost for the first half-an-hour ride for members only and for non-members Rs.10/- will be chargeable for 30 minutes ride. The subscription for the bike sharing will also be available for one week pass at Rs. 199/-, Monthly pass Rs.399/-, six month pass Rs.1199/- and the one year pass at Rs. 1,999/-. The facility of Bike Sharing in New Delhi area will be available between 6 am to 10 pm.

It is gratifying to note the excellent response to Smart Bike in New Delhi since its soft launch last month with thousands of Delhiites taking memberships and using Smart Bike. NDMC is doing remarkable work in this area under the many Smart City initiatives to make happy people of New Delhi area, Mr. Manohar added.

Mr. Dharmin Dontamsetti, the Co-founder and Managing Director of Smart Bike Mobility Pvt. Ltd., talking on the portability of usage said “by integrating the Metro Smart card and by feeding real time system data into the local transit app, we offer seamless connectivity between both modes of transport.”
