On World Environment Day, President Kovind, PM Modi Urge People To Make This Planet Clean And Green

New Delhi: On the occasion of 46th World Environment Day that is being celebrated today globally with the theme of Beat Air Pollution, President Ram Nath Kovind reaffirmed India’s commitment to a cleaner and the sustainable planet, adding that living in harmony with nature is a part of the Indian ethos. Sharing his message on social media, he added, “India is committed to addressing climate change and bequeathing a greener, eco-friendly habitat to our children.”

On the other hand, urging people to plant more saplings for a better tomorrow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked citizens of the country to find ways to make planet Earth more clean and green. With a video message, PM Modi tweeted,

We are born and brought up in such an environment where nature is treated as ‘God’. We all must think of ways of making this planet more clean and green. Our planet and environment is something we all cherish greatly. On the occasion of World Environment Day, we all should come together and reiterate our commitment to ensure a cleaner planet.

PM Modi further added how people should not just plant saplings on this world environment day but should also pledge to take care of the sapling in the near future, he said,

The rainy season is coming, therefore, I urge you all not to only plant a sapling but also make arrangements for its care so that it can grow in the coming years. We all must connect ourselves with the environment.

Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu asked citizens to take a firm pledge to protect nature and the environment by saving energy, water, reducing the use of disposable plastics, promoting reusable materials, planting saplings and reducing dependence on fossil fuels by adopting renewables. He also added,

We all must take united action and promote the campaign to adopt environment-friendly habits and protect nature. Love and live with nature. I also urge the protection of the environment from pollution; air pollution is the scourge of our modern lifestyle.

Appealing people to plant more trees, Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that everyone must act as an agent of change and save the Earth and environment for future generations.

‘Making the world a better place. One tree at a time,’ with this thought in mind External Affairs Minister of India, Dr S Jaishankar participated on the occasion of World Environment Day to plant a tree at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan.

Meanwhile, in Punjab, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh launched TandarustPunjab 2.0 initiative with an aim to make it one of India’s healthiest state. He added,

As we launch #TandarustPunjab 2.0, we are on our way to make Punjab the healthiest state in India by launching with a mission to provide clean air & water, safe food, and ensuring a healthy environment. Looking forward to your support on this mission! #WorldEnvironmentDay

Many other politicians too have come forward on World Environment Day to spread awareness.

World Environment Day: All That Has Been Done So Far To Celebrate The Occasion

To encourage tree plantation among people, on the eve of World Environment day, the government launched an initiative #SelfieWithSapling, wherein people are asked to plant saplings and send in their selfie on social media using the hashtag. Environment Minister Prakash Javadkar while launching the campaign had said that protecting and improving the environment is the major issue, which affects the wellbeing and economic development of people all over the world. He added,

This year’s theme #AirPollution invites all of us to consider how we can change our everyday life to reduce the amount of air pollution, global warming and its consequent effects on our health by our contribution. Let’s all come together and plant more and more trees.

Today, taking part in the event organised at Paryawaran Bhawan headquarters, where Kapil Dev and Jackie Shroff also participated, Union Minister Babul Supriyo urged citizens to do their bit and pledge to plant more and more trees.

Apart from the campaign, Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Bhamla Foundation, a Mumbai based non-governmental organisation (NGO), had also produced an official anthem– ‘Hawa Aane De’ with an aim to make people aware of how they can help Beat Air Pollution.

NDTV – Dettol Banega Swachh India campaign lends support to the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). Helmed by Campaign Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, the campaign aims to spread awareness about hygiene and sanitation, the importance of building toilets and making India open defecation free (ODF) by October 2019, a target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014. Over the years, the campaign has widened its scope to cover issues like air pollution, waste management, plastic ban, manual scavenging and menstrual hygiene. The campaign has also focused extensively on marine pollution, clean Ganga Project and rejuvenation of Yamuna, two of India’s major river bodies.
