The #PadManChallenge has gone viral, with celebrities and people from all walks of life coming forward and posting picture of themselves holding a sanitary napkin with a message ‘Yes, that’s a Pad in my hand and there’s nothing to be ashamed about. It’s natural! Period’

New Delhi: Actor Bhumi Pednekar accepts co-star Ayushmann Khurrana’s #PadManChallenge, posts a short video on her social platform saying, “Hanging with my trusted weekly best friend, who keeps me secure, healthy and stress free – my PAD. No Shame. PERIOD.” The Toilet: Ek Prem Katha famed actor further challenged the male celebs of the industry – Sushant Singh Rajput, Ali Abbas Zafar and Tanmay Bhat, saying ‘Pad It Up Boys’.

Ayushmann Khurrana had posted a photo of himself holding a sanitary pad, he said, ‘I accept the challenge @radhika_apte.’ He further nominated Bhumi Pednekar, Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra; all of them had accepted the challenge and posted a picture of themselves with a sanitary napkin.

The #PadManChallenge has been taking the rounds of social media from Friday, when Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who started the low cost sanitary pad revolution in the country challenged the PadMan movie stars Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, Sonam Kapoor and co-producer Twinkle Khanna. He posted a picture of himself with a sanitary napkin and said,

#PadManChallenge. Yes that’s a Pad in my hand & there’s nothing to be ashamed about. It’s natural! Period. #StandByHer. Copy, Paste this & Challenge your friends to take a photo with a Pad! Here I am Challenging @akshaykumar @mrsfunnybones @sonamakapoor @radhika_apte.

Since then, from movie stars to sport personalities and the ordinary netizens have come together and joined the cause to break the embarrassed silence around menstruation. Some of the known faces who have taken the challenge already are Badminton champion PV Sindhu, Indian Cricket Head Coach Ravi Shastri, Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Deepika Padukone, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma to name a few.

The movie PadMan starring Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor, will hit the theaters on February 9. The movie is a biopic on Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who fought against all the odds in 2004, and came up with first low-cost sanitary pad making machine. Since then he has build-up 4500 sanitary pad making factories operating nationwide, is supplying women with sanitary pads in 4,500 villages and providing technology for his low cost hygiene products to 19 other countries. In 2014, Arunachalam Muruganantham was placed by the Times Magazine in in the list of 100 Most Influential People In The World. Two years later, in 2016, he received the Padma Shri.
