Coimbatore: The city corporation on Monday launched the Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya campaign in 60 elementary and middle schools run by it.
The initiative–Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya-Smart School-Healthy Child was the continuation of world hand washing day event being held every year and will focus on personal hygiene among children, segregation of waste, maintenance of toilets and also awareness on sanitation, official sources said.
Being carried out in association with Arc Foundation, an NGO, the program covered 60 elementary and middle schools run by the corporation today and will be conducted in all the 83 corporation schools during the month.
The Corporation commissioner K Vijaya Karthikeyan spoke to the students about his experiences related to hygiene habits.

A path breaking initiative by the GoI. Students are the ideal mascots for Swachh Bharat initiative. The Swachh vidyalaya focuses on three major aspects:
1. Emphasis on clean drinking water
2. Promoting hand washing habit
3. Basic sanitation and hygiene facilities for students.
The government through the swachh vidyalaya puraskaar is also awarding schools taking the lead in implementing these measures in schools.
A push from the corporate sector will be ideal in bringing the necessary acceleration.
