    International Yoga Day 2024: From Times Square To Patong Beach, The World Celebrates Yoga

    This year marks the 10th International Day of Yoga with the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.” Here’s how it is being celebrated globally

    International Yoga Day 2024 theme: Yoga for Self and Society

    New Delhi: It is a watershed year on the Yoga calendar – ten years since the world made this form of exercise official. The fan following has only grown with every passing year, across the world. 2024 is no different.

    The official X (formerly known as Twitter) account of the Consulate General of India in New York made a post sharing photos of the International Yoga Day 2024 celebrations at Times Square. The post read, “The day-long celebration of Solstice at @TimesSquareNYC featured seven yoga sessions, in which about 10,000 people from across nationalities participated, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm for yoga in the city (sic).”

    Despite rain, the Indian Embassy in Tokyo marked the 10th International Day of Yoga at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple. The event saw an overwhelming participation from Japanese Leadership, diplomats, and Yoga enthusiasts. In pictures, people are seen holding an umbrella and practicing yoga.

    Indian High Commission to New Zealand celebrated the day on a large scale with students, the United Nations Association New Zealand, Indian community members, Kiwi friends and representatives of various Yoga Institutes.

    The embassy posted, “Yoga has indeed become a global movement with a positive impact on many lives.”

    Indian Embassy in Thailand too joined the celebrations with several universities and institutions hosting yoga events. Following the theme of ‘yoga for self and society’, the embassy co-organized a yoga event with Indians living in Thailand at the famous Patong Beach in Phuket. The participants engaged in a beach cleaning activity, following a yoga session.

    Students and faculty members of Siam University and Satit Rangsit School in Thailand also took part in the celebrations.

    The Indian High Commission in Malaysia commemorated the day with over 1,200 people. The yoga enthusiasts gathered at the Batu Caves Complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to mark the day.

    The Embassy of India in Nepal on Thursday (June 20) organised yoga demonstrations at three iconic landmarks of Pokhara, the tourism capital of the country. This includes Sarangkot temple and viewing point which offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna mountain range; Pumdikot Shiva Temple; World Peace Pagoda.

    Today’s mega celebration at the Pokhara Rangshala Stadium witnessed a turn-out of over 5000 yoga practitioners.

The campaign will continue to raise awareness on the same along with focussing on the importance of nutrition and healthcare for women and children, fight malnutrition, mental well-being, self-care, science and health, adolescent health & gender awareness. Along with the health of people, the campaign has realised the need to also take care of the health of the eco-system. Our environment is fragile due to human activity, which is not only over-exploiting available resources, but also generating immense pollution as a result of using and extracting those resources. The imbalance has also led to immense biodiversity loss that has caused one of the biggest threats to human survival – climate change. It has now been described as a “code red for humanity.” The campaign will continue to cover issues like air pollutionwaste managementplastic banmanual scavenging and sanitation workers and menstrual hygiene. Banega Swasth India will also be taking forward the dream of Swasth Bharat, the campaign feels that only a Swachh or clean India where toilets are used and open defecation free (ODF) status achieved as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, can eradicate diseases like diahorrea and the country can become a Swasth or healthy India.
